Citizenship is now taught throughout the Junior School and is continued as one of the strands in Learning for Life and Work at Key Stage 4.
Topics covered
Year 8 - Diversity and Inclusion
We look at differences in our class, our school, our community and in the world and discuss the need to include everyone regardless of their race, religion, age, gender, disability etc.
Year 9 - Equality and Social Justice
We discuss what it feels like to be excluded, the kinds of groups who may be excluded in our Society and the role of the individual, Society and the Government in promoting Social Justice. (See photos on Christian Aid visit.)
Year 10 - Democracy and Active participation
We investigate what we mean by Democracy and how we can take part and express our opinion. (See photos on Stormont Visit.) We discuss why we need laws as well as looking at crime and its consequences for young people. (See photos relating to the CASE programme.)
Year 8, 9 and 10 - Human Rights and Social Responsibilities
This involves looking at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and making pupils aware that as Human Beings we have rights and responsibilities.
