Every pupil studies English
throughout his/her five years at Markethill High School.
The Curriculum comprises preparation in the three Attainment Targets for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
In Year 10, English Literature is offered as an optional choice for pupils intending to sit the GCSE examination.
While most pupils study for GCSE, a number who wish to follow vocational rather than academic courses prepare for the Certificate of Education (Welsh Board), and for A.E.B. Literacy Tests, levels 2 and 3.
The school Library is an integral part of the English Department, regularly used by pupils
for study and leisure-time reading - it is open at lunchtime on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays.
Various extra-curricular activities are also closely allied with the English Department; these include "Improving Literacy" activities for the Junior pupils, the Debating Society and the Public Speaking Club.
