In
Markethill High School, French is taught to all pupils in Years 8-10. In
Years 9 & 10, the A1 and A2 classes also study Spanish for two years. At
the end of Year 10, pupils can choose either language for G.C.S.E.
Currently all pupils in the 11A1 and 11A2 classes study a language at G.C.S.E. level. Pupils are prepared for the AQA Modern Languages G.C.S.E. in either French or Spanish. Pupils can choose to study both languages and provision is made according to demand.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Traditionally, the European Day of Languages is celebrated in Markethill High
School with a delicious continental breakfast enjoyed by the whole school, and
hosted by Mrs. Marshall and the canteen staff. Sponsorship for the event
has come from the local community, e.g. Hunter's, The Village Bakery, Fane
Valley and Golden Cow, and we are all very grateful for this kindness.
This September (2006) our feeder Primary School principals were invited to a
reunion with their former pupils. Other guests included the Languages
Advisor, Mary Yarr. As usual, the event was a great success.
In 2004, the Modern Languages department worked jointly with the Music Department to organise a Choir trip to Paris, performing a 30-minute programme of music on stage at EuroDisney, and visiting the sights of the city. We hope to repeat this in the near future.
