Pupils in Years 8-10 follow a common course of study that prepares them for the Key Stage 3 Examinations.  This is detailed in the table below:-

9 4 Starting Science 2 (OUP) Study 6 Science Units.  Assessed through:- homeworks, end of unit tests; and Winter/Summer examinations
10 5 Keystage 3 Science Classbook (LETTS); Foundation Science to 14 (OUP) A  Classes study blocks of Biology/Chemistry/Physics in 10-week rotation

B  Classes are not rotated

Both sets of classes are assessed through:- levelled homeworks and tests; Winter/Mock examinations

As Science is a compulsory subject to Key Stage 4, all pupils continue to study Science in Years 11 and 12.  A pupil's overall performance at Key Stage 3 determines their course of study for Key Stage 4.  Below is a table of their options.

CLASS PERIODS per week Textbook used (with publisher) DESCRIPTION OF WORK
GCSE Double Award Science 10 Living/ Material/ Physical World (NELSON) Timetabled for Biology, Chemistry and Physics separately, taught by subject specialists.  Follow syllabus for NICCEA GCSE examinations.  Teacher assesses pupil progress through homeworks and class tests.

GCSE Examinations (3 papers) taken at the end of Year 12 account for 75% of final marks.  Coursework accounts for 25% of final marks.

Leads to the award of 2 GCSE grades

GCSE Single Award Science 6 Science At Work (LONGMAN) Taught in modules by subject specialists.  Follow syllabus for NICCEA GCSE examinations.  Three module GCSE examinations taken in each year (6 in total).  Terminal GCSE examination taken at the end of Year 12.

Coursework accounts for 25% of final marks.

Leads to the award of 1 GCSE grade

COEA Single Award Science 6 Science At Work (LONGMAN)

Various

Taught in modules by subject specialists.  Follow syllabus for WJEC COEA examinations.  Three modules taken in each year (6 in total).  End of module class, and oral, tests count towards final result. Terminal GCSE examination taken in March of Year 12.

Coursework accounts for 25% of final marks.

Leads to the award of a Certificate of Educational Achievement
